Training styles and methods

We specialise in but are not limited to reining and western performance training.  We also re-educate horses and riders to address behavioural problems.  Other specialties are show preparation, sales preparation and training for longevity.

Dressage foundation training starts by getting the horse to go long, low, relaxed and forward to build great muscle structure in the top line of the horse.  Good strength is needed for dressage moves enabling a rhythmic and controlled stride.

Reining and Western Performance Training  focuses on excellent body control and a relaxed happy minded horse.  We help horses find that comfort zone where they feel good and balanced and enjoy their job.

About Reining

Reining is a western riding discipline where horses perform patterns at a canter or gallop.  Horses do slow and fast circles, 360 degree spins, a backup, sliding stops, lead changes etc

"To rein a horse is not only to guide him, but also to control his every movement.  The best reined horse should be willingly guided with no apparent resistance and dictated to completely."

Reining foundation training develops a quiet, soft and willing horse and is great performance training overall.

Behavioural problems
If your horse is not happy we consider the reasons why.

If the behaviour is uncharacteristic, a health assessment and treatment may be needed.  This may be followed by rehabilitation to  build confidence and strength, then maintenance work.

If the behavioural problems are due to  the handler/rider,  then some  ground work and  re-education to create good habits again may be needed.

Training for longevity  involves slow correct training to give the horse confidence.   Correct timing and feeling is everything.  Each horse is looked at as an individual, horses deal with pressure in their own way, and training will be adjusted to suit your horse’s needs.  That's why short term training starts at a minimum of 3 weeks.  Creating a solid foundation for the long term requires consistent effort.

We train to the owners capabilities and goals.  No horse is educated to the point where they are beyond the capabilities of the owner to ride and enjoy.  If your goal is to simply to enjoy riding, or to show or sell your horse, we can help.
